Cable label generator

Consistent cable labels use a template with tokens for site, room, rack, RU, panel and port. Each cable shows an A-end and B-end, and the generator flags labels that exceed the printer width, duplicates and missing tokens before you print.

Enter your template and range below. Everything is generated in your browser from what you type.

How this is worked out

Every setting is on this page and every label is yours to change. A generator with hidden rules is not a tool.

Templates use curly-brace tokens that are replaced with your field values. The TIA-606 preset is inspired by that standard, but you should adapt it to your site standard rather than follow it literally.

Zero-padding keeps port numbers aligned (P01 through P09), which sorts correctly in spreadsheets and on printed sheets.

Questions about cable labels

Why label both ends?

Every cable has two ends. Labelling both means you can trace a cable from either side without guessing. A label that only makes sense from one end is half a label.

What is TIA-606?

TIA-606 is a labelling standard for telecommunications infrastructure. The preset here is inspired by it, but you should adapt the template to your site standard rather than follow it literally.

Why zero-pad port numbers?

Zero-padding keeps numbers aligned (P01 through P09), which sorts correctly in spreadsheets and on printed sheets. Without it, P10 sorts before P2.

What label size should I use?

The default 50 by 12 mm fits most patch leads. Check your label printer for supported sizes. Keep text under the maximum characters so it fits on one line.
